Nude beaches good for Florida's economy, legislators told

About 150 people are on hand for the Broward Legislative Delegation's last scheduled meeting in Broward County before the spring legislative session.

A range of speakers is getting time at the mic for a range of issues: workforce development, spaying and neutering pets, funding for Tri-Rail- and nude beaches.

Richard Mason, president of government affairs for South Florida Free Beaches and the Florida Naturist Association asked Broward legislators to oppose any measures that would force nude beaches to close.

He said the closest one to Broward, Haulover Beach in Miami-Dade County, is an economic engine that draws tourists (27 percent of the total) from other states and countries to a place where they can enjoy a beach without the encumbrance of clothing.

"In the last two sessions of the Legislature, there were bills introduced that appeared to be for one thing, but had they passed as written, they would have closed Haulover Beach Park's Naturist Beach," Mason said.

He said Haulover, which gets 1.4 million visitors a year, is "the most successful beach in the state of Florida."

Mason said Haulover's clothing-optional beach outdraws the Marlins and Dolphins combined - a comment that drew some titters from the crowd.

Mason also asserted what everyone involved in a tourism-related activity cites: immense economic impact from their cause. He claimed Haulover's economic impact is between $400 million and $800 million a year.

Other people appearing before legislators got questions from the dozen legislators present; none asked anything or offered any response to the Haulover advocate.

At least one segment of the Key West business community has spoken: Eighty percent of 225 tourism-based business owners surveyed say they support a clothing-optional beach in the Southernmost City.

More specifically, of the supporters, 48 percent say "Key West needs a clothing-optional beach" and 31 percent say they "support the concept of a clothing-optional beach but only if it is located out of view."

Eleven percent of responders either were against or were leaning toward being against a clothing-optional beach, while the rest of the responders didn't care one way or the other.

Earlier this week, Key West Innkeeper's Association President Ian Whitney distributed the surveys to businesses and has since compiled and released the results. Those who were surveyed include the owners of guesthouses, retailers, restaurants and attractions.

"We think it's important to give our members the opportunity to share their opinions on whether or not to have a clothing-optional beach in Key West," Whitney said. "The survey results show that, while there are differences of opinion on this issue, there isn't much controversy."

The public dialogue over a clothing-optional, or naturist, beach in the Southernmost City began a few months ago when County Commissioner Heather Carruthers and City Commissioner Teri Johnston began an initiative to revitalize Higgs Beach.

Since then, the movement has taken on a life of its own with the creation of the group Florida Keys Free Beaches, which, in turn, is an offshoot of Miami-based South Florida Free Beaches.

Richard Mason, president of South Florida Free Beaches, was instrumental in the designation of a quarter mile of Haulover Beach in North Miami as clothing-optional in 1991. Miami-Dade County groups that monitor area tourism estimate Haulover Beach's yearly economic contribution at around $400 million.

Mason told the Keynoter that clothing-optional beaches are designed to be family friendly and that a common hang-up in legislation is the inability to separate nudity from sexuality.

"That's the way we've been raised," he said "There's a lot of adults out there that believe that mere nudity isn't offensive to a child. A lot of people, they're only nude when they're taking a shower or having sex. That's the thing they've got to learn about naturists -- it's non-sexual nudity."

Mason also explained, using Haulover as an example, that naturists take pride in maintaining their beaches and stick to strict rules of etiquette, monitor folks with potential sexual agendas and are good stewards of the environment.

"It's almost like lifting a boulder off your shoulders. It's a type of freedom you have to experience to understand. That's what America is all about -- choices."

..New Yorkers are up in arms about the destruction of a fence that used to separate a Rockaway family beach from a nudist shore.
The chain-link fence that divided the family-friendly Neponsit beach from the adults-only Riis Park was torn down during Hurricane Irene and has not been repaired, much to the frustration of local residents.
Neponsit visitors have complained that they are forced to put up with the ‘anything goes’ attitude of the Riis Park beachgoers, who often stroll naked in the sands.
They claim sex and other ‘lewd’ activities take place on the beach, which police are reportedly aware off, according to the New York Daily News.
‘There was a man who walked over, took his clothes off and started doing stretching exercises in front of a young woman,’ Peter Sammon, a Neponsit resident, recounted to the newspaper.
‘This is not a healthy situation.’
The fence was initially erected 100 years ago but authorities are refusing to rebuild it, claiming that state law requires public access to all beaches below the high tide line.
'We are continuing to work closely with all involved on this matter,' parks commissioner Adrian Benepe Benepe said.
'This fence has blocked access between two public beaches for decades. Having free passage between them will allow New Yorkers to fully experience the great sweep of the Rockaway peninsula.'
But residents who claim they have not been consulted on the matter remain dissatisfied.
'The fence stood up there for years without any issue,' Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder (D-Rockaway) told the newspaper.
'It didn’t come down on purpose. It came down because of a storm.'

Se fosse cosi', e' chiaro che le "famiglie" si lamentino...
Se invece ancora si continua a pensare che le spiagge nudiste possano (e siano) frequentate solo da adulti e invece le famiglie, proprio per definizione, si tengono su il costumino e non si "confondono" con i nudisti, allora il problema e' altrove; finche' la mentalita' e' questa...!!
